CAPE, Teaching Artist

Chicago Arts Partnership in Education (CAPE) connects teaching artists with Chicago Public School teachers to develop original, creative lesson plans. CAPE began its partnerships in 1992 with a variety of programs. As a teaching artist I help integrate art practices in the classroom. At Bronzeville Scholastic Institute I assisted teacher Aaron Stingley and two of his Communication and Journalism classes with a project that asks the students to consider his or her legacy. Each student is encouraged to take the project in their own personal direction. We have discussions about open-ended artistic practices and question-asking instead of trying to seek answers. In the end each student created a website that included different elements, such as photography, graphic design, essay writing, video, etc.
